Lamp Rewire

I think I have been cursed with lamps breaking for awhile now. It started with this gorgeous lamp from Walmart. It was mercury glass and had a great shape. I’ve bought multiple replacements until it was no longer sold.

Ways this lamp has been broken

  • Cat zipped across desk
  • Ex-Boyfriend didn’t take it off the table before moving it
  • Puppy chewed the wire
  • Current boyfriend didn’t move the lamp before moving the table

What’s up with pets and boyfriends breaking my lamp!?

Finally, I gave up on the idea of having a glass lamp.I kept my eyes peeled for a sturdy yet stylish lamp at the Goodwill. The day came where I decided to visit the Goodwill concept store that only carries home goods. I lucked out with two solid brass lamps in great condition. Bonus: Brass is back. No need to DIY. Until my Dog got a hold of it. The joys of owning a Husky.

After my derp wolf chewed the wire I decided I wasn’t going to give in and buy another brand new mass produced product. I only paid 6.99 for each lamp at the Goodwill. I was going to go into Lowe’s and probably spend too much on plants but lucky for me the road to get to Lowe’s was closed. I didn’t want to go around the detour to get there. I called my local True Value and they had what I needed. If you are not good with DIY projects they even rewire the lamps for you at no more than 10 dollars. I decided to save more money and do it myself. The kit I got was just the wire because that is all I needed. I paid 7 dollars with tax. If I was slightly more patient I could have gotten it on Amazon for less than 5 dollars here

The first thing I had to do was remove the wire from the lamp and separate the housing. It was just a matter of unscrewing everything. I had to get the two metal pieces apart with a flat head screwdriver. Then I started threading the wire through the lamp. It got stuck in the thin part of the lamp toward the top. I started over but with a long string of yarn tied to the end of the wire. It worked! Then it was just connecting the two wires to the screws at each side of the lamp kit.  You can’t mess it up! It doesn’t matter which wire goes on each side. When you have those pieces together just put all the pieces back together and thread everything back the way it came. This part really depends on your lamp. I had to start over again because I missed a piece so don’t feel bad if you do too. It took me less than 30 minutes to fix my lamp. Now the derp wolf is getting obedience raining and lots of chew toys to fend off boredom.
